Open-air classrooms and environmental education have become an important issue in early childhood education and school education in recent years.
Be it forest nurseries or sustainability in class – nature is learning space as well as a setting for exploration and experience encourages self-determined and creative exploration. “Terramo”, the new Wehrfritz range of outdoor play equipment, has been designed with nature in mind: The elements promote outdoor activities and deliberately seek to follow in mother nature’s footsteps with regard to design.
“For just like in nature, Terramo has few right angles and as far as possible avoids symmetry: as it is the case with a spider’s web or a tree, the individual components are similar but never exactly the same,” says Marc Bähring, product manager for outdoor play equipment at Wehrfritz. The individual Terramo elements are varied and of an unobtrusive design to blend harmoniously with the surrounding landscape. The colouring is also inspired by nature: fresh green is set against earthy brown, while copper orange adds a bright and vibrant touch.
The Terramo play elements are designed to provide plenty of opportunities for free, imaginative and creative play and with their highly stimulative nature they encourage children to come up with play ideas of their own. Users are often deliberately left in the dark about what will or is to happen. Due to the various levels of difficulty, children can decide for themselves how much risk they are prepared to take.
Wehrfritz has developed the nature-oriented play spaces in close co-operation with the Forschungsstelle für Frei- und Spielraumplanung (FFS/ research centre for open space and playground planning). The interdisciplinary planning office implements nature-oriented open space design and does research on the subjects of early childhood, promotion of child development and learning support. Those who opt for a nature-oriented playground concept by Wehrfritz, get both theoretical and practical expert knowledge. More information on the planning, design and implementation as well as on the Terramo range can be found in the new Wehrfritz handbook http://www.wehrfritz.de/blaetterkataloge/de/2013/hk/html5.html#1250 – it can be ordered free of charge by public institutions and responsible bodies at www.wehrfritz.de/kataloge or by calling the service hotline on 0800-8827773.

Konrad-Adenauer-Platz has been extensively redesigned. The aim was to improve the quality of stay through playground equipment, water, greenery and street furniture.
