Exercise for everyone in a green landscape

Photo

The building plan for the residential area Galgenberg II, 2. BA, includes compensation areas and open spaces which are located on the eastern outskirts of Waiblingen. To the west and south this area is bordered by existing residential areas.

The green concept is based to a great part on creation of enclosed green areas and consistent shaping of the town outskirts through reactivation of neighbouring orchards and the recreation of a ‘pomology’ on the mentioned terraced wall system. Around 100 fruit trees have been planted here in the shape of an “apple hall”.

Under the trees a new exercise opportunity has been provided, developed in cooperation with the TU Munich (department of sports science), with 11 fitness stations, all of which combine current training and sport-scientific findings. The 4F circuit concept (F = fit / free / fun / function) involves an integrative approach with the special factor that all the stations can be used independent of age, level of fitness, height of the person and opening times. It provides fun-oriented, sensible and efficient training for coordination, strength, endurance and flexibility.

It is well known from experience that in order to be popular with users, exercise facilities must be located near residential areas and the single stations must be near to each other (the “keep-fit-wave” trails in wooded areas were reported to be “too far away”). The single fitness machines (e.g. balancing beam, pedalo track, target throwing, step tower, body side lift, back stretch, push-up, chin-ups, dips, etc.) are lined up along the path, separated from each other with ivy-covered trellises. Each station is equipped with training instructions in varying levels of difficulty. In this way, the training sessions can be increased according to individual requirements. The possibility of installing further fitness equipment under the “apple hall” also exists.

Along with this elaborately designed pomology with its fitness track, other naturalised open spaces are being created in the “green sleeve” and “fruit tree funnel” which include shell limestone towers and walls, sandolines and other limestone formations. These are just as appealing to all generations and have been carefully designed in order not to intrude in the surrounding landscape.
