'Bewegungsplan 2019' – plenty of innovations and information all around contemporary playground and exercise spaces

The now seventh 'Bewegungsplan' seminar organised by Playground@Landscape was held in Fulda in Hessen on 2 and 3 April 2019. Again, more than 170 participants came and used the opportunity to attend the interesting and informative podium discussions and to take part in the inspiring workshops. In addition to the main programme, participants could exchange views, see what was being showcased in the small accompanying trade exhibition or simply enjoy the ambience and catering offered by the event venue.

At the core, however, as every year, was the seminar programme, which in 2019 also included a wealth of innovative and informative presentations. The educational specialist Prof. Rolf Schwarz of the University of Karlsruhe inaugurated the event with a fascinating talk on the subject of 'Learning and exercise'. There were subsequent presentations on the topics 'Planning and construction of water playgrounds' and 'Designing school playgrounds' and there was an introduction to how playground planning is approached in one of the most family-friendly cities in Switzerland ‒ Lausanne. This year's podium discussion centred on the problem of whether excessive legislation is becoming detrimental to playgrounds. A playground safety expert, a school headmaster (who campaigns for more exercise in schools) and representatives of the German Association of Play and Leisure Equipment Manufacturers (BSFH) and a local authority considered the issue of how much risk playgrounds should offer, how children can learn to protect themselves and whether the increasing level of health and safety regulation is preventing this. On the conclusion of the first day, those who attended the plenum discussion were then able to choose between one of four workshops on offer. These dealt with the themes 'Play equipment safety: local authority practical examples ‒ standard-conform or not?', 'Field trip: exercise spaces in Fulda', 'How to design a successful parkour park' and 'How to involve locals in the planning of play facilities – successful strategies'. In the evening, everyone came together for dinner in the Wappensaal room of the hotel.
The second day of the event began with talks on the planning of a dirt bike course, the ActiveCity in Hamburg and a central facility for roller sport fans in Göppingen before the main theme ‒ playground safety ‒ reappeared in the programme. The three presentations dealt with the new standards for the design of accessible play spaces, parkour facilities and permanently installed outdoor fitness equipment. Participants were able to take home with them for use in their day-to-day work new insights and an awareness of what new innovations are now available. The organisers would like to take this opportunity once more to thank all speakers, workshop providers and sponsors for their support of the event and, of course, all participants for attending. The next 'Bewegungsplan' event is to be held on 21 and 22 April 2020.
