Second round of competition with "Mission Olympic"

Photo

The commitment has paid off: Witten, Herzogenrath, Haltern am See, Emsdetten and Delbrück from North Rhine-Westphalia are the official candidate towns of Mission Olympic, the nationwide competition between cities and towns by the German Olympic Sports Association (DOSB) and Coca-Cola Deutschland. Hence, the towns have come a step closer to the title of “Germany’s most active town” and the prize of 75,000 EUR for recreational sports.

In order to qualify for the final, the sports commitment of the citizens is examined: With immediate effect, all initiatives for exercise and sport are selected from the total of 29 candidate towns to take part in the competition Mission Olympic. The search is for sports groups, teams, meetings and organisations which, through their civic commitment, lead people to do exercise or keep them exercising. Sports initiatives can apply up to the 22 October via the website www.mission-olympic.de. The commitment for their town can also be rewarded with a payment of 5,000 EUR.

Walter Schneeloch, President of the State Sports Association in North Rhine-Westphalia is convinced by it: "North Rhine-Westphalia is a very sporty region. This isn’t just demonstrated by the varied, voluntary commitment in organised sport, but, in particular, the people who campaign for more exercise privately. Whether it be a running/jogging group or hiking club - Mission Olympic would like to cater to and reward all those who motivate their compatriots into leading a healthier lifestyle.

In November the official jury will get together and choose five final towns, which will organise a festival of sport as the final of Mission Olympic in 2011. Then the activity of the citizens decides who will become “Germany’s most active town 2010/2011”. The title and prize money will be presented at the end of 2011.
In May DOSB and Coca-Cola had heralded the fourth urban competition Mission Olympic. Also during this year, towns will be sought nationwide which are making their citizens exercise in the long-term. The special prize of the competition this year falls under the motto: “Move it – For more exercise in everyday life”. With this special prize, the initiators would like to feature sports and exercise projects which are aimed at children and teenagers and will bring about more exercise and sport in everyday life. The special prize is remunerated with a total of 10,000 EUR for the first three places.

With Mission Olympic, initiators DOSB and Coca Cola would like to promote recreational sports on a long-term basis and also focus on an active way of life. All candidate towns, further information and current press photos for mission Olympic can be obtained at www.mission-olympic.de/presse
