Children don’t spend enough time outdoors

Photo

More than 80 percent of the four to 17-year-olds cannot, for instance, manage to stand on one leg for one minute. Many even find cycling difficult. The reason for inadequate mobility and a lack of sense of balance: Young people are seldom willing to put on their trainers and leave the house to do some exercise. “Physical exercise often gets neglected nowadays,” warns Frank Grunwald, Health Expert at Deutscher Ring. Every fourth child between 3 and 10 is not physically active enough on a regular basis, every eighth child does no sport at all.” Particularly in cities, the children’s natural urge to be active is hindered by insufficient opportunities to play in the fresh air. However, parents play a part in this if they set a poor example to their child as a result of wrong behaviour. Instead of getting their children excited about running riot and playing outside at an early stage, some parents would rather plonk their offspring in front of the television or computer because of a fear of the dangers outside.
