Two bespoke barges were installed last week at the Wisbech site following a military style operation involving a 300 tonne crane and a team of specialist contractors. Cambridgeshire Police were on hand to manage the traffic and to ensure the crowd were kept at a safe distance. The barges were built and fitted out in Peterborough utilising local expertise, and the boat builders were on hand to see the “Maiden Voyage”. The barges were introduced to reflect the region’s maritime history and provide a unique indoor facility. One of the steel barges was partly funded by Aiming High for Disabled Children (AHDC), a government programme to ensure that needs of disabled children are a priority at both national and regional level. The barges will home an arts and craft room and toilet facility complete with a fully equipped wet room facility for disabled children. Other design features include exciting self-build areas that allow children to create different play environments, fire play, natural play, social areas and an amphitheatre. Sutcliffe Play was the only play equipment manufacturer appointed to create one of the 30 adventure playgrounds that formed part of the previous government’s £235 million investment in play.
