The PV Frisbee solar roof project was established at the campus of the European School of Taipei (TES) with a celebratory inauguration. Drafted by the well-known architect Kao Ying-Chao, it also serves as an aesthetically-appealing playground roof.
“The PV Frisbee project is special in many respects. It isn’t just the design and functionality that are emphasised, but also the chance to allow the next generation to demonstrate and experience how energy products of the future work,” rejoiced Erhard Krausen, Manager of the business area Building Integrated Photovoltaics with abakus solar AG, at the opening of the solar roof project in Taipei. As a public-private partnership, the project at the European School is one of ten schemes which the Deutsche Energieagentur GmbH (dena) has been supporting in the framework of its “dena Solardachprogramm zur Auslandsmarkterschließung” (dena solar roof program for foreign market development) in 2009. Other cooperation partners are the Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Technologie (BMWi) (Federal Ministry for Economics and Technology), Melchers Trading GmbH, a2peak power Co., Ltd., AUO Corp., bio formosana architects, SMA Solar Technology AG and TÜV Rheinland.
Eponymous of the PV Frisbee is its disc shape, which was created in accordance with the design by Taiwan architecture Kao Ying-Chao. It consists of a total of 32 PV modules with a total output of around 7 kWp and displays a projection area of about 100 m². Depending on the weather conditions, the operators expect an output of around 7,500 kWh of electricity per year. “This results in a reduction in CO2 emissions of around five tons per year,” summarises Krausen.
As well as high quality demands, the topic of safety is paramount in the product. Thus, the PV Frisbee is the first dena solar roof project which was verified and certified by TÜV Rheinland. As a playground roof, PV-Frisbee offers protection from sun and rain.
