Successful re-topping despite adverse conditions

Photo

The correct conditions for processing liquid plastics had not always been kept to during the installation work, with the result that even after 20 years, the material had still not cured properly and had the consistency of stringy chewing gum. The whole system was unstable and the surface layer could be lifted off in some places. A difficult problem which, unfortunately, is a common occurrence. Situations like this can only be remedied with great experience, a lot of detective work and good assessment skills if, for financial reasons, the whole system is not to be completely removed and rebuilt. Where necessary, the specialists from PorplaticEngineering removed all layers of material, including the base mat, and replaced them. Everywhere else, where the track was in an acceptable condition, the work consisted only of preparing the substrate for re-topping with PorplasticSW. The team completely removed the derelict inner channel with a safety cut and replaced the drainage system in precision work and under difficult conditions, as the work was carried out at the end of Autumn 2008 with falling leaves and uncertain weather.

The team was up to the challenge however. Today the stadium shines in new splendour and provides first class sport opportunities. Nothing remains to be seen of the “patchwork” damage and the surface looks and feels like new - the athletes can enjoy an attractive and homogeneous track.

Inclusive sports and inclusive sports facilities – still a long way to go

Inclusion and inclusive infrastructure design are still very topical issues. On the one hand, this is very positive and shows that people are aware of the issue and also want to promote it. On the other hand, however, it also shows that we are not making as much progress as we would like to and that there are still clear deficits.
