Be it sports facilities, events or mobility: the energy-saving potential in sports is great. The DOSB has realized this and addresses this important issue with various campaigns. The initiative promoted by the Federal Ministry for Environment pools climate protection activities in sports, communicates these and develops new ideas. The www.klimaschutz-im-sport.de Internet portal and a competition titled “Climate Protection in the Sports Club” are just two of the numerous measures.

The DOSB with its initiative is one of the 365 winners that are given an award every year by the “Germany –Land of Ideas” nation-branding initiative under the patronage of German President Christian Wulff in co-operation with Deutsche Bank. The awards were presented at the closing event of the DOSB climate protection project at the Frankfurt Literature House on 5 September 2011.

DOSB Director General Michael Vesper commented on the award: ‘We are very proud to be a “Selected Landmark” in the Land of Ideas. Climate protection in sports holds advantages for all parties involved: energy-saving measures in sports facilities reduce CO2 emissions and help the more than 91,000 sports clubs with their over 27 million members save money.’

“Prime example of practised environmental protection”

Thomas Eberle, Head of Trade Finance / Cash Management Corporates at Deutsche Bank for the Frankfurt / Mainz area, honoured the initiative as a “2011 Selected Landmark” and emphasized at the awards ceremony: ‘The German Olympic Sports Confederation takes responsibility for the future – in a field that, at first sight, has little relation to climate protection. The “Climate Protection in Sports” initiative is thus a prime example that environmental protection can be actively practised in all fields.’

Among 2,600 entries, the “Climate Protection in Sports” initiative convinced the independent expert jury and thus represents Germany as the “Land of Ideas”. The “365 Landmarks in the Land of Ideas” competition honours “Selected Landmarks” that stand for creativity, viability and sustainability.

Inclusive sports and inclusive sports facilities – still a long way to go

Inclusion and inclusive infrastructure design are still very topical issues. On the one hand, this is very positive and shows that people are aware of the issue and also want to promote it. On the other hand, however, it also shows that we are not making as much progress as we would like to and that there are still clear deficits.
