Turf pitches for FIFA Football World Cup 2010™

Photo

Desso Sports Systems have been asked by the 2010 FIFA World Cup organising committee in South Africa to install a Desso GrassMaster system at two match venues for the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™.

In the coming weeks the Desso GrassMaster system will be installed at the stadiums in Nelspruit (Mbombela) and Polokwane (Peter Mokaba). The Desso GrassMaster system is made up of a 100% natural grass surface, into which 20 million synthetic turf fibres have been injected to a depth of 20 cm. The roots of the natural grass intertwine with the artificial fibres, anchoring the field to give a stable and level grass surface. Installation at the first field (Mbombela) is planned for the end of April.

With this grass system, the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ will have perfect pitches available throughout the tournament. Over a short period of only several weeks, the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ stadiums will be exposed to intense use for both training and matches. The Desso GrassMaster system ensures an optimal playing surface in any weather conditions.
After the tournament, the pitches will continue to be used for football and rugby games. Stef Kranendijk, CEO Desso: "Supplying the stadium pitches for the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ is naturally a prestigious project for our company. By doing so, we hope to contribute to the legacy of this tournament and to inspire future top events."

Desso GrassMaster has already been used with great success by top international clubs and has already proven its reliability at the highest level. Renowned clubs such as Arsenal, Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City or AZ Alkmaar have installed the Desso GrassMaster system in their stadiums. The Desso GrassMaster system has also been used successfully for both rugby and American football pitches and is used by top clubs in the American National Football League such as the Denver Broncos, the Green Bay Packers and the Philadelphia Eagles.

Desso Sports Systems: 30 years of international experience with artificial turf
Desso Sports Systems is well known at an international level as an innovative specialist for artificial turf. With focus on research and development, manufacture of its own artificial turf fibres and installation, as well as maintenance of artificial turf pitches, Desso has collected a unique treasure trove of experience over the last 30 years and has been responsible for installation of more than 50 million square metres of turf for elite and amateur clubs throughout the world. Furthermore, Desso has already made a name for itself in South Africa. The artificially reinforced natural grass pitch in the Newlands Stadium is considered the best stadium playing field in South Africa.

Inclusive sports and inclusive sports facilities – still a long way to go

Inclusion and inclusive infrastructure design are still very topical issues. On the one hand, this is very positive and shows that people are aware of the issue and also want to promote it. On the other hand, however, it also shows that we are not making as much progress as we would like to and that there are still clear deficits.
