New safety flooring for climbing halls

Sports flooring manufacturer BSW has developed a new programme consisting of several safety flooring solutions for climbing halls.

The range comprises six different flooring systems, all of which are made of elastic, impact-absorbing materials. Two of the floors have been developed for rope-secured indoor climbing. The floors termed regugym climb have a closed, seamless wear layer and an elastic base layer made of composite foam and rubber polyurethane elastomers. Their force reduction, an indicator of their elasticity and shock absorption, is 46 or 73 per cent, making them by these percentage points softer than a concrete surface. Falls from low heights are effectively cushioned. But even when falling from great heights, the injuries may be less severe. Besides, the floors are safe to walk on and provide a safe surface for the securer. Their surfaces are available in many colours; even advertising graphics, for example from sponsors, can be permanently applied. Elevating trucks and lifting platforms can be carefully used on them. Their wear layer made of low-emission polyurethane has been applied in sports and multi-purpose halls for more than 40 years and is characterized by a high load capacity and durability. Moreover, they are very easy to clean. The elasticity of regugym climb, which can be felt when walking on it, conveys a feeling of additional safety. Two other floors are used as crash pads in boulder halls. The floors regugym boulder 1 and 2 are composed of up to 24 cm thick, multi-layer composite foam tiles and a wear layer consisting of needle fleece. They serve to reduce the consequences of injuries when falling from the usual boulder heights.
The range is completed by two floors used at outside climbing walls, one of them being a long-proven impact protection tile, which is usually installed in playgrounds. Its standard-tested fall height is three metres – a critical height up to which, in all probability, no life-threatening injuries will occur in the case of a fall and uncushioned impact to the head when hitting the floor.
The BSW safety floors for climbing halls have already been installed in several climbing halls and have proved their worth in these applications. They have been developed by BSW in co-operation with operators of climbing halls. (www.berleburger.de)
