Urban street style at the Electoral Palace

The Federal Horticultural Show Koblenz 2011 has more to offer than fragrant flowers and classical music concerts: the new skate plaza on the BUGA site in front of the Electoral Palace with height difference of up to one metre and various, custom-made concrete skate elements is designed to entertain and challenge skateboarders, BMX riders and in-line skaters alike.

The Temple of Heaven is a temple site in Beijing, in which the Emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties prayed for a good harvest every year. The complex lies in the Xuanwu district in the south of the town in the middle of a large park.

Designing a playground is always a challenge. There are so many regulations, standards and customer requirements involved that it is difficult to keep a clear overview. An additional aspect in Koblenz was the requirement for a maximum of accessibility for the disabled as well as safety from flooding, while focus was to remain on the play and experience value for children.

There were 61 participants: Heads of parks departments, senior employees from horticultural companies, associations for the promotion of State garden shows, planners and landscape gardeners accepted the invitation to the show to exchange news and views with their professional specialist colleagues. The programme included lectures on horticultural practice and constructive discussion seminars.

Here girls and boys learn how to deal with others fairly and the recognition of rules in a playful manner – this is incredibly important for the future of our society. Therefore, Wiesbaden is investing in artificial pitches,” says Dr. Helmut Müller, the Mayor of Wiesbaden, the capital of the state of Hessen.

Water, heating, electricity - these are all major causes of environmental pollution and so the club examined its financial resources carefully and carried out a seven year trial. The result is now obvious. Expenditure for electricity fuel oil fell drastically. By exercising a great deal of care and entrepreneurial spirit, the club is even creating future income from sales of energy.

Hylands Park Estate creates an Adventure Castle with Timberplay

Developed to complement the historic landscape, Hylands Adventure Castle, has been constructed as a modern day folly, a building located at the northern end of the estate to encourage visitors to explore more of the park. It was designed to delight and enthral young visitors, but also provide more challenging play for teenagers. Chelmsford Borough Council selected Timberplay to create the Castle, confident that they could build a bespoke play feature to complement Hylands historical landscape.

National campaign saves the playground!

Emma Kane, of Hook Norton, Oxfordshire, launched the Save the Playground campaign last year after government cuts jeopardised funds set aside to create new playgrounds. She told the BBC that the Playbuilder scheme, introduced by the previous government, was a unique example of Big Society; uniting communities to secure funding. She also highlighted the importance of playgrounds in the fight against childhood obesity.

Empress Augusta's "Jewel Box". Play in Empress Augusta's Jewel Box at the Electoral Palace. Between 1856 and 1858 Augusta von Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach, later to become the German Empress and Queen of Prussia, resided in the Koblenz Electoral Palace.
